Vancouver Area Male Breast Reduction
For many men, the measure of health and fitness is a toned and well-developed chest. Unfortunately, some men cannot achieve this appearance even with a healthy diet and rigorous weight lifting and exercise. Up to 50% of males suffer from enlarged, feminine-looking breasts, or gynecomastia, at some point in their lives. This can cause embarrassment and discomfort, and may limit activities and clothing choices. For patients in the Vancouver area, male breast reduction can be performed to create a firmer, flatter, more masculine-looking chest.

About Gynecomastia
Overly developed breasts in men of otherwise normal weight (gynecomastia) is a medical condition that can affect males of all different ages. Gynecomastia can cause embarrassment and self-consciousness, and often men who have this condition have been teased since childhood for having a feminine-looking chest. Of our patients in the Vancouver area, male breast reduction patients are among the most satisfied, as this procedure can be life changing.
Primary gynecomastia occurs during puberty and the cause is unknown in most cases. This condition is often temporary, improving without intervention as adolescence progresses. Secondary gynecomastia occurs in adult males, and is more common than primary gynecomastia. Vancouver area men should be evaluated to be sure that there is no underlying medical cause for this condition before seeking male breast reduction.
Gynecomastia Treatment in Vancouver
Most cases of gynecomastia are a combination of fatty tissue and excess breast glandular tissue. Often, gynecomastia can be corrected with liposuction alone, which improves the contour and decreases the bulk of the breasts. Smartlipo™ is particularly effective for removing the excess volume, and additionally tightening the overlying skin for a firmer appearance. In either case, a very small tube called a cannula is inserted through small incisions, and the fat is suctioned out and permanently removed.
In cases where a large degree of glandular tissue is present, or there is an excess of loose skin, surgical removal may be necessary. For this procedure, Dr. Mosher typically makes a discreet incision along the border of the areola (the more darkly pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). Surgical excision may be performed alone, or in conjunction with liposuction for the best results. In many instances the areola is also larger than desired and this can be reduced as needed for optimal aesthetics of the chest.
Recovery and Results
Male breast reduction is performed as an outpatient procedure at our surgery centre using light general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. You will be advised to keep your activity level limited for a few days following surgery. Over the course of 1 to 2 weeks, bruising and swelling will subside, and you will begin to see the results of your procedure. However, full results may not be achieved for up to 3 months following your surgery.
