BOTOX®
Cosmetic has proven safe over millions of treatments in
the past decade.
BOTOX®
Cosmetic
is an injectable treatment using a purified protein that
temporarily blocks the signal between the nerve and the
muscle resulting in muscle relaxation. When carefully
performed, this safely modifies the ability of a muscle
to create a wrinkle or fold in the skin. It can also
result in a change in forces acting on soft tissues such
as the brow or lips.
Dr. Mosher
can utilize this effect
to improve the shape of facial structures or diminish
unwanted facial lines.
Dr. Mosher will discuss how the
treatment can be best suited to your needs.
|
How is BOTOX® Cosmetic different from Hyaluronic
Acid Fillers? |
BOTOX®
Cosmetic relaxes the underlying muscles which cause many
facial lines and unwanted facial expressions. Hyaluronic
Acid Fillers provide temporary and flexible support to
the skin surface. Frequently,
Dr. Mosher will use BOTOX®
Cosmetic in combination with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
when treating certain areas where deep lines have
resulted from overactive muscles creating repetitive
folding of the skin. The most common example would be
the frown lines between the eyebrows and upper lip
lines.
|
How much does BOTOX® Cosmetic cost? |
BOTOX® Cosmetic is very affordable even for those with
modest incomes. However, just like any other
non-essential item, most people need to budget for it
just as they would for buying accessories like shoes and
having their hair styled. The average cost is $12 per
unit of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Different amounts of BOTOX®
Cosmetic are used to achieve the desired results in each
patient. Treating the frown lines in a
woman would be around $300-400. Men generally require
more product to address their larger muscle mass and,
therefore, they can expect to pay between $400-600 for
the same area. Other areas generally require less BOTOX®
Cosmetic. Crows feet reduction, upper lip lines, neck
lines and forehead crease treatments average around $250
per area. You can request additional product at
any time but you should plan to repeat your treatments
two to three
times per year.
For areas requiring larger amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic
and for our loyal clients’ maintenance treatments,
Dr.
Mosher offers a price reduction.
|
How long do the results last? |
The
effects last an average of three to four months. At this time an
additional treatment is recommended in order to limit
the full recovery of the unwanted muscle activity. After
several treatments many patients see their results
lasting longer.
Yes. Literally millions of treatments have been
performed around the world using these products.
Dr.
Mosher has treated hundreds of patients over the past
decade with great success. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been
licensed in Canada for use in a variety of settings
since 1990 and for wrinkle reduction since 2001. Optimal
results with the least risk of problems can only be
achieved by experienced physicians. Rarely, a small
bruise, mild tenderness or unwanted temporary muscle
weakness can occur in the treated areas.

Pre-treatment instructions: |
It is good to
pamper yourself on treatment day! Try not to be hurried
and stressed before you arrive. Having a nourishing
breakfast or lunch, and an extra glass of water prior to
your treatment will make you more comfortable. Although
the discomfort from the treatment will be very minimal,
some patients like to take a couple of Tylenol™ tablets
before treatment (similar to what you might do before
having a flu shot) to prevent discomfort. As a practical
matter, bruising is seldom a major problem after BOTOX®
Cosmetic treatments.
The chance of bruising can be
reduced by minimizing your consumption of ASA and
anti-inflammatory medications for one week before and
reducing alcohol and Vitamin E for at least three days
before your treatment.
Please wear no makeup, or
makeup that is easy to remove, so that the area to be
treated can be clearly seen. You can bring makeup with
you, and you may apply your makeup immediately after
treatment. We can also help you with our therapeutic and
elegant Glo®Minerals makeup.
|
Post-treatment instructions: |
Very
small red marks at the site of each injection usually
disappear in less than an hour. It is possible to
develop some bruising that could be visible for up to
one week. The risk of bruising is increased with
activities that increase circulation such as exercise,
heat and drinking alcohol, so you are advised to avoid
these for the remainder of the day. A few patients will
develop a headache after treatment that can be managed
with ice or acetaminophen.
In order to decrease
the risk of weakness developing in unwanted facial
areas, you should not massage the treated area for the
rest of the day. You are advised to avoid lying down for
at least four hours after treatment. Exercising the muscles
that have been treated for a few hours after your
treatment may lower the risk of unwanted side effects.
Finally, the results
from your treatment will not be fully appreciated until
at least seven days after the treatment. The improvements
will be gradual and without any change in sensations. If,
for some reason, you are not observing the desired
changes, then contact the office to see if it is
necessary for
Dr. Mosher
to review your treatment
results.
Your next treatment
will be scheduled for about four months later but can be
delayed if your results last longer.
