Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

The arm lift or brachioplasty procedure is used to improve the appearance of excess skin and fat in the upper arm

Some have used the unflattering name of "batwing deformity" to describe the problem of excess skin and fat in the upper arm. Typically this occurs after significant weight loss when the skin is unable to tighten adequately. In some patients there is an inherited tendency to have excess fullness on the upper arm.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION

Surgery can improve the appearance of this area through two primary techniques.
The first is used when there is an excess of loose skin as well as fat and requires a scar that extends along the inner upper arm beginning in the armpit. The incision may need to extend to the elbow if the problem is severe.

The second technique used is liposuction. When the skin tone is acceptable, liposuction can be used to decrease the bulk of the excess fat deposited along the lower border of the upper arm. This procedure only requires a small incision near the elbow and therefore avoids nearly all visible scarring.

This is a day surgical procedure that requires you to wear a compression garment over the arms for about one week.
