Breast enlargement remains one of the most common cosmetic
surgical procedures performed. An
implant
is placed behind the
breast tissue to enhance the shape and size of the breast.
Breast augmentation in the presence of breast ptosis or
"droopiness" requires a correction of the excess skin and shape
in addition to enlarging the size. This is particularly common
after pregnancy or other instances of weight gain and loss.
Choosing the right breast augmentation procedure involves a
thorough consultation with
Dr. Mosher. Decisions will need to be
made regarding the size, shape, and type of
implant. Different
techniques including
implant
position and incision choices for
achieving your desired improvements will also need to be
discussed in detail. |
|
- Women who desire
larger breasts.
- Women with a minimal
degree of breast sagging and smaller breasts, whose
problem can be solved by enlargement alone.
- Women who have one
breast that is noticeable smaller than the other.
- Women who have breast
implants already but are unhappy with the breast shape
or size.
|
- Larger, firmer, and
shapelier breasts.
- An improved self-image
and sense of proportion.
The operation is done
as an outpatient procedure in
our private
surgical
facility under light general anesthesia.
A small incision is made and an
implant is inserted
under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and
the underlying muscle.
The most common
implant
used is filled with saline (salt water). However, more
and more women are choosing cohesive silicone gel-filled
implants after reviewing all of their options.
Dr.
Mosher creates the space for your
implant using direct
visualization and instruments that minimize the risk of
bleeding and bruising. Most importantly, there is no
blunt or blind stretching of your tissues which greatly
reduces your discomfort and recovery time.
Initial discomfort is
well managed with oral medications, stretching exercises
and ice during the
first 48 hours. Nearly all our patients are able to
return to normal activities and work within a few days.
Normal clothes and a sports bra are possible immediately
after the surgery. The breast shape will look improved
right away but the final shape will take up to three months
for the tissue to relax. More strenuous exercise must be
avoided for two or more weeks. The recovery can be
influenced by many factors including implant size, where
the
implant is positioned and the patient
characteristics.
Swelling is present for two weeks and occasionally there
is bruising.
Mastopexy (breast lift)
may be needed to achieve the best breast shape when the
skin tone is poor or the nipple is beginning to point
downward.
Breast lift surgery can often be done at the
same time as augmentation if necessary. Reducing the
areola diameter or changing the nipple size and position
can also be considered.
Liposuction
of the side of the
chest or in front of the shoulder can also improve the
chest aesthetics. This can be done at the same time if needed.
