Liposuction is most common
cosmetic surgery procedure performed in North America. It is
also one of the procedures that are most often used
inappropriately. Liposuction involves the permanent removal
of fat cells in the layer between the underlying muscle and
the skin. Carefully reducing the fat layer thickness can
result in exciting improvements to your body contours that
would be hard or impossible to achieve with diet and
exercise alone.
- If you have excess fat
accumulations in specific body areas that are resistant
to your sustained efforts at diet and exercise.
- If you are looking for
shape improvements and not increased tone and smoothness
of the overlying skin.
- Most patients should be
near their ideal body weight, eat a balanced and
nutritious diet and should exercise regularly.

- Your weight should be
stable and near your goals prior to having surgery.

This operation is done at
our private
surgical facility under a light general
anesthetic or using sedation and local anesthesia.
Tumescent liposuction techniques are used. This involves
introducing fluid into the areas of fat to be treated to
make the fat cells more amenable to removal while
greatly reducing the amount of blood loss, bruising and
discomfort associated with surgery.
Very small incisions
(1/4" long) are made near the areas of localized fat.
Once the tumescent solution is in place, small suction
tubes (cannulas) are inserted and the excess fat is
removed. In many areas,
Dr. Mosher
utilizes UAL
(ultrasound-assisted liposuction), PAL (power assisted
liposuction) or SAL (suction assisted lipectomy) to
achieve the best results. Newer technologies have
improved the results with liposuction in previously
difficult areas to treat such as: the flank, back, male
chest, and areas that have had previous liposuction.
The patient can go home the
same day wearing a compression garment.
There is manageable discomfort during the first week with most patients returning to light activities and work in three to five days.
Light exercise is possible within days of the operation but more strenuous exercise must be postponed for about three weeks.
Compression garments
are advised for two to six weeks as they decrease
swelling and bruising and add comfort. Improvements are
visible in ten days with final results requiring three to six months.
Additional liposuction or further minor contouring is
possible after at least six months. The results of
liposuction are permanent only if the patient continues with
the necessary nutritional and exercise changes to their
lifestyle required preventing fat storage.
Exercise and good nutrition are important components of getting the results you want with liposuction. The best results are achieved in areas that have not responded to diet and exercise.
If you have loose skin, liposuction should be combined with skin tightening procedures such as
tummy tucks
and thigh lifts.
In some instances, Dr. Mosher may recommend a staged approached to liposuction with procedures separated by approximately six months.
