Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)

This is a commonly performed procedure to reshape the ear or ears to create an improved or less conspicuous appearance. Very often this involves the creation and accentuation of the normal folds in the ear as well as turning the ear closer to the side of the head. "Pinning" the outstanding ear back de-emphasizes the appearance of the ear(s) and restores the proper proportions to the face. Outstanding or prominent ears are the result of different development of the ear cartilage. Children have more flexible ears and this makes correcting the problem easier. Often this is done before the child enters school. Adults can also have this procedure performed easily and successfully.

This procedure is done under a light general anesthetic in most circumstances but may be performed under local anesthesia. An incision is made on the back of ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is reshaped and held in that new position by permanent stitches under the skin. Dissolving stitches are used to close the skin incision. A head bandage is worn for three to five days after surgery.

• There is only mild discomfort following this surgery.
• Once the bandage is removed you can resume a normal lifestyle.
• You are encouraged to wear a headband over the ears at night for about six weeks.
